Logan’s renowned NAIDOC celebrations, which some say are the best in the country, kick off next Tuesday 9 July.
The Logan District Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Corporation for Elders is running a full day event at the Kingston Butter Factory from 9am.
Uncle Terry Stedman said there would be around 65 impactful and relevant stallholders, ranging from health services and Griffith university, to YFS.
“NAIDOC is about recognising the first nations people of the country and their original occupation of the land here – which is recorded for greater than 60,000 years,”
“The occupation of the people who aren’t first nation here is only a couple of hundred years – so it’s only a speck in the matter of time.
Uncle Terry said locals would leave the event “soaked in culture and wanting more”.
“People come because it’s an experience,” he said.
Last year, more than 5000 people attended the NAIDOC celebrations at KBF despite rainy conditions.
This year’s event will consist of free performances from local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island artists – both on stage and a corroboree ground – cultural workshops, stalls, rides, and plenty of food.
There will be damper-making demonstrations, a damper competition, bush-tucker sessions and “lots of fun for all”.
“Last year we had language classes, cultural weaving classes, theatre with presentations, magic, a cooking demonstration and people talking about their experiences growing up in Logan,” Uncle Terry said.
“And that’s just a very quick snapshot of what’s there.”
Those attending can register to catch public transport for free on the day, or park at Logan Entertainment Centre and access free shuttle buses to KBF.
The theme of NAIDOC 2024 is ‘Keep the Fire Burning! Blak, Loud and Proud’, encapsulating “the unapologetic celebration of First Nations identity”.
