From watching anime together as children to celebrating the first anniversary of their pop-culture store, cousins Sarrin Stewart and Shontel Bussa are living their dream.
The Logan pair opened Dorky Desires, a collectables and games store at Springwood, to service like-minded “dorks” keen to let their inner-dork shine.
Now the business-partners are celebrating their first year of success and are planning for many more ahead.
“Celebrating our first anniversary feels surreal; it’s like living in a dream we don’t want to wake up from,” Ms Bussa said.
“The journey has been filled with so many memorable moments, and reaching this milestone is incredibly rewarding.
“It’s a testament to our hard work, dedication, and the amazing support from our community.”
Dorky Desires sells rare cards and other collectables, with a specialised games room for people of all ages to immerse themselves in role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons.
Already, the store has attracted customers from far and wide.
“We’ve had people travel well over an hour just to participate in our events or simply to hang out and enjoy the unique atmosphere we’ve cultivated,” Ms Stewart said.
“The feedback we’ve received about our store’s vibe being ‘awesome’ has been incredibly flattering and motivating.”
She said the store had grown since its inception “in ways we never imagined possible” – now the cousins are talking about expanding into next door and have plans to one day open a food truck.
“The future is bright, and we’re excited about the endless possibilities,” Ms Stewart said.
Over 12 months, the business has expanded its product range, increased the size and frequency of events, and collaborated with local businesses.
“We’ve had the pleasure of sponsoring major events like the Collectors Market in Beenleigh, which has been an exciting and rewarding experience,” Ms Bussa said.
As for their personal relationship outside the business, the cousins say it has been like jumping into the deep end.
“While it’s been challenging, it has strengthened our bond immensely,” Ms Bussa said.
“We’ve learned to communicate better, support each other more, and have grown closer in ways we never thought possible.
“The experience has been overwhelmingly positive for our personal relationship.”
She said Dorky Desires had “a beautiful, inclusive community that rewards us daily”.
“Building something special is one thing, but seeing it come to life and resonate with so many people is another,” she said.
“The gratitude and support from our community members have been truly heartwarming.
“We’re excited to see what the future holds and can’t wait to celebrate even more milestones, like our two-year anniversary.”
