Students at Yarrabilba are getting a head start on their careers thanks to a new school-based TAFE training workshop.
The $1.5 million facilities at Yarrabilba State Secondary College includes engineering, construction and automotive workshops, along with a hair and beauty training salon.
The engineering workshop features training equipment, grinding room and two welding booths, while the automative workshop offer students two bays complete with a car hoist and joinery work bench.
Yarrabilba automotive student Chloe Glasson said she wanted “hands on experience learning”.
“I think it’s great for anyone wanting to add a little extra something to your resume.”
Her peer Jerome Cherobo said the new workshop would help make his “dreams come true”.
“Honestly, I still don’t even believe we have this training facility in our school,” he said.
“It’s exciting because this is the start of everything that I want to do.”
Member for Logan Linus Power said the new facilities would mean students from Years 10-12 would be able to access TAFE courses while at school.
“Earlier today I spoke with a student completing training right here in Yarrabilba–she’s set to kick off an apprenticeship tomorrow and believes that the skills acquired here have paved the way for her success,” Mr Power said.
The Minister for Training and Skills Development, Lance McCallum, said more TAFE training like this was needed in the area considering “Queensland’s growing population and economy”.
